Lecture Program:

Because of the uncertainty of international travellers being able to attend, we have organised for you a team of first rate Australian speakers, who will share theirknowledge on a range of topics and genera.

Professor Kingsley Dixon from Curtin University in WA will present the Keynote Address on The Past, Present & Future of Australian Orchid Conservation. A biologist who is also an active ‘community scientist’, he has lead the WA Native Orchid Study
and Conservation Group and been a member and regular speaker at Wildflower Society meetings across WA.

Dr. Marion Davey, from NT and currently president of the Australian Orchid Council, will present 2 talks: the first on Bulbophyllum Growing Techniques, and then The Role of Species in the Breeding of Vandas.

Gary Yong Gee, a very knowledgeable local from SE Queensland, who has a particular interest in species orchids, will also present 2 talks: one on Orchids of Madagascar and the other on Phalaenopsis Species.

Michael Coker of Victoria will present talks on Paphiopedilums and Phragmipediums.

We have a few speakers who will share their knowledge of different types of Dendrobiums. With the range of climactic conditions in Queensland alone, let alone Australia wide, we have experts in Dendrobiums from different sections suited to different regions.

Roslyn Capell from Northern NSW, with her particular interest in inter-sectional Australian and Australasian Dendrobium hybrids, especially those between warm-growing and cool-growing species, will present on The Use and Influence of Den. canaliculatum in Australian Native Orchid Hybridising.

Phil Spence, an orchid grower, researcher and hybridizer from the northern Sydney suburbs, is also a world expert on New Guinea orchids and Latouria Dendrobiums. In 2016, he received the Award of Honour from The Australian Orchid Foundation for taking a leading role in introducing PNG orchid species and hybrids to Australian and international growers, while respecting conservation in this region. He will share his knowledge of Latouria Dendrobiums.

Callyn Farrell of Down Under Native Orchids has been growing orchids for most of his life, having caught the bug from his grandfather, Grahame Young, with whom he founded Elermore Orchids in 2013. Callyn will focus on Dendrobium Section Rhizobium in his presentation.

This is just a selection of the speakers who will attend the conference. I will introduce the others in the next update.

Vendors:

The sales area will have the capacity for up to 30 vendors, and those attending should be finalized in the next couple of weeks. Keep an eye on the website https://aocc2022.org/conference for details.

Show:

Some of the committee have become concerned that there is a belief that AOCC2022 is a highly scientific event, and is not suited to many orchid society members and enthusiasts. Let me assure you that while the conference speaker program is aimed at growers who are looking to improve their knowledge of scientific aspects such as orchids in the wild, conservation, breeding programs, and advances in growing techniques, the SHOW is aimed at EVERYONE, be they a society member with a small collection, someone new to growing orchids, or just a lover of plants in general, including the associated art and photography. And everyone who attends the show will have access to the sales area, and be able to purchase something exciting to build their collection.
We are aiming to stage the biggest and best orchid show seen in SE Qld for many years, certainly the most spectacular of the year. With this in mind, if you or your society would like to set up a display as part of the show, complete the registration form for orchid society displays at https://aocc2022.org/forms and email to Ken Haase. Even if your society doesn’t want to stage a large floor display, a table display put together by 2 or 3 growers might suit you. You will receive a payment for your efforts, depending on the size of the display, as you will be helping us create something wonderful!

Bus groups:

Now is the time for your society to consider planning a bus trip to the show for your members. We know that some of our members are of the elderly type, and no longer feel confident driving ‘in town’. But who doesn’t like a day out on the bus? As a bonus, entry is reduced for groups from the single cost of $10. (40 & over $8.00 per person; 30 – 39 $8.50 per person; 20 – 29 $9.00 per person)

As always, if you have a question or concern, go to https://aocc2022.org/planning-committee to contact one of us.
